I love this author and I love this book.First, I don't provide summaries.
Now. This book works fine as a stand alone. You could even read it out of order in this case. But. I wouldn't. The whole series is worth owning. Start with Intertwine and go from there. Book Four was going to be the last, but I gather Ms. Van heard her fans who wanted Daniel's story after he came back into the plot in Book Four for the tall, grey-eyed Viscount.
It is a rich, complicated story with a female protagonist you cannot help love. And Daniel has grown up. At points I wished the author had slowed down a bit, taken a little more time. An awful lot happened in the last 15% of the story.
But here is the thing--Ms. Van's stories are grounded in the belief that love is light, and good will find a way. I keep coming back to them, rereading this series and the Brothers Maldetti while waiting for the final Maldetti book to be published, because they are passionate, inventive, living, breathing stories you can share even with a younger niece or a young adult friend.
Add an aside, the Brothers Maldetti series has a completely different world and characters and it's fun to see her write back and forth between the worlds.

When I found out there was another book to this series, I had to buy and and see how it ends. I was curious to know what happened to Daniel, Kit's younger brother. This book has a series of themes such as loss of a child and acceptance of who you are. I was happy to see Jasmine and Timothy living happily with their children, even though she was feeling ill due to the side effects of the portal. Fossi is the only hope to Daniel has to fix the portal due to great mathematical knowledge on theorems. Throughout the novel, you can see how they become attractive to one another, not just physically but through how much similar their personalities were. I immensely love how this series concludes.
Wow what an ending. Probably the deepest and most real of all the books in the series. It hits on some very true aspects of life. I love that Van can tell a fiction time travel story but bring in real elements of life that we all deal with and make it all so real. I enjoyed this one is a deeper way then the others. I was a little worried there were things I wasn't going to like it but it all came out so beautifully in the end] I am so sad to see the end of this series and that is a rare thing. I am normally very done with most book series and ready to move away from them. I just adore Van's writing style and characters.
As others have said, I agree that this is probably the best book of the series! I read it in two days. I just didn't want to put it down. I really enjoyed it a lot. It had suspense, humor, sadness, and happiness. I really believe too that you really need to be intelligent to really get everything out of this book. There is a lot of dry humor and advanced thoughts throughout the book. One thing I will mention though is the mystery of the locket from the first book is never explained in the series. Most people probably don't even remember that, but I always looked for that in the later books. Anyway, I have enjoyed this series a lot, especially the first and fifth books. I look forward to reading more of Nichole Van's Maledetti series too.
So first off, this series. All. The. Heart. Eyes. I absolutely LOVE Nichole Van's writing. She is a brilliant storyteller. Her characters are deep and human and endearing. And her House of Oak series has everything my girlish heart could want Regency era goodness- the language, all the flirtatious banter and clever wit I love about that period in time. The clothing, the homes, the order of society, it is all so fascinating and is described in such vivid detail you feel like you're actually there. And speaking of which, the next thing I love about the series Time travel adventures. Somewhere in Time meets Back to the Future. The mysterious time portal creates the most excitement and intrigue that the characters experience, as well as providing them with their biggest obstacles to overcome. It is just so fantastically done. And then there's my favorite aspect of the series the romance. It's impossible to choose a favorite love story of the series, as each one brings together two people who are just so utterly perfect for each other, you can't help but love their love. This story focuses on the relationship between Fossi and Daniel, a couple who seem doomed to both live lives of heartache and loneliness. As their relationship moved through the evolution from strangers who are each helping each other to meet a need, to respected associates, dear friends and finally the love of each other's lives, I found myself cheering for them every step of the way. Once again, Nichole Van has swept me up into her world and my only complaint was when the ride was over and it was time to rejoin reality. Luckily for me, I can go back and visit the House of Oak again and again, as this is a series I have already devoured more than once, and I know I won't be able to stay away.
I didn't realize that there would be another book in the House of Oak series, but I was delighted to buy it! All of the books have interrelated characters, but can be read independently or out of order. This story focuses on Daniel Ashton (Kit's brother from Clandestine, book 3).
The time portal is broken and he searches out mathematician, Foster Lovejoy to help him solve the problem mathematically. What he doesn't realize is that Foster, Fosse, is a woman.
The theoretical math was beyond me in this book, but I loved the character. Fosse was brilliant, but had never been valued. Daniel seemed hard, yet had a vulnerable side. I loved watching them see each other.
My favorite scene included a confrontation where some character from previous books were sitting on the sidelines making pithy comments, and some modern ones too (you go girl!).
I would recommend starting with book one, but this is a great series with time travel, romance, and a healthy dose of humor. I love Nichole Van!
